Rees Mogg and associated nutters now batting for May in the [justified] belief that her incompetence will lead to a no deal Brexit?
Again with this Nixon-style madman theory negotiating strategy except that the madman theory works best (in theory) when you don't immediately go out telling the world and her husband what your negotiating strategy is.
In two minds about this Forest Gump-style take on British politicians. It's not that I cannot believe they are this deluded and incompetent - I can. It is more that I can equally believe in a number of iron triangles that cross borders easier than they class divides and that that old British perfidy can [and always did] involve things polite people find scarcely credible. If the British ruling classes decides to throw Europe under the bus, it will.
Also, Boris Johnson's rhetoric is parodically Churchillian. A hard Brexit makes sense in pure ideological terms that overlap with Steve Bannon's talk of Leninism and social breakdown, that's true. But are there other unspokens involving catastrophic projections of geopolitical breakdown / renegotiation / changes in the structure of and/or existence of multinational organisations, other end games that would make it a more coherent, if no less sociopathic choice?
Brexit is not happening in a vacuum but at a period when practically everything about the post WWII order is up for renegotiation & indeed, prominent Brexiters are aligned with those who have done most to rip them all up. I'm not convinced we have talked enough about that.
Johnson et al may be idiots, posturing zealots, Colonel Blimp style xenophobes or what have you, but there is also a certain amount of devious machination going on & there are advisors in all this thinking it through.
@krozruch As far as implementing the no-deal plans in full goes, anything less would be a poor PR choice right now. As I understand it no one originally refused to implement no-deal plans either - they just didn't do it with any urgency.
@cbowdon Yeah, the thread was like a mid-diet binge out. Having just finished Alternative War by J. J. Patrick of Byline, I figured that ought to be peak Brexit for me. I'm trying to read less about it, & Trump, possibly even the state of things here in Prague & with the V4. Inevitably, I won't manage that too well. Certainly, I expect to randomly rant here & there.. Whatever the intention of the hard Brexit prep, I think nobody would rule it out now. A Brit abroad, I'm processing that.
