"Josie Hills, a senior tax manager at Pinsent Masons, said not being able to educate their children at Eton, Harrow or Winchester was a key worry for many of the law firm’s rich clients, who were considering moving to Switzerland and other low-tax countries with well-regarded private schools."
Apologies to English speaking comrades, but this calls for a distinctively Italian exclamation than cannot be translated: PORCODDIO
EmacsConf 2019 is tomorrow. Even if a conference about Emacs doesn't seem like your thing, it's worth taking a look at how it's being put on.
It's 100% remote, all talks are live streamed, live transcriptions are posted to IRC. Audience questions are taken from a different IRC channel.
It's the conference version of "everybody dials in." I'd like to see more conferences put on this way.
Just like that, Google have all your fitbit location and activity data (walking? typing? txting? protesting? sex? You bet they have models for all of those behaviours)
Saw a post on Twitter t'other day about how they should stop having the news broadcasts on BBC Radio 6 Music and BBC Radio 3. Listen to both and absolutely agree. Nigel Farage top billing now, which may be reasonable in itself, but their framing of anybody who talks about the damage Cameron's Age of Austerity did to the country with far-right-adjacent (at best) talking points is appalling
The Herald newspaper have published results of a survey of their readers, and it must be choking them. 😃
If there was a second Scottish independence referendum
Westminster voting intentions
If there was a second EU referendum
It’s written in python/flask/vuejs and I need help because of health issues I’m unable to work a lot on it anymore, if you are interested to help me on some of the issues and more specially the ActivityPub part, you can contact me through:
boosts appreciated, thanks.
A latino owned, queer-friendly, majority-femme software company that builds education software for Montessori schools is hiring a full-time engineer, either on-site in Seattle or remote. ~2ish years experience either in Rails or React preferred.
They're very synchronous and face-to-face pairing/discussion oriented but work well with introverts such as myself.
Boosts appreciated. HMU if you want an intro or go tohttps://www.transparentclassroom.com/developers
Grenfell Tower Fire report
imagine ... the press is starting to place the blame of the deaths at the hands of the fire brigade instead of dealin w a council (richest in city in one of the richest cities in the world) that knew the building (full of poorer, mostly POC folx) was a fire hazard, with flammable materials and little to no safety at all.
Hungover. Having accidently defrosted a goose and cooked my first Czech goose, sauerkraut and dumplings last night, we put on a few records (mainly old Czech stuff: Naima, Marta Kubišová, Eva Olmerová, Vladimír Merta), drank some of the wine I bottled last week and had a smoke. Slow day; started off in a tea house with green tea and ginseng.
@blkstarseed i mean when we talk about environmental resistance, and lets center usa for now, how we are not centering Indigenous and AfAm folx who have a deep relationship with that land?
How are we not centering Caribbean folx, both Afro & Indigenous in terms of climate change, land use, tools of resilience bc of racism & poverty?
Lastly, ppl who have been forced to be resourceful in poverty in these places due to settler colonialism & WS are kept out of the discourse bc BLACK/BROWN
"Potato dumplings from grandma". Kind of.
Neglected my diet while I was in Moravia on the vineyard and came back ADHD as hell. Woodstock's parents use a freezer in the basement here and I went down to sort the boxes of wine and took what I thought was a leg of lamb we got through a friend months back. Turns out it's parents' goose. Anyway, so I'm cooking a goose for the first time and there'll be potato dumplings, cabbage, etc. People have been telling me I'm an honorary Czech for years, but it comes by such degreees.[D
@GwenfarsGarden I have a lot of thoughts about trad publishing and survivor bias and the way it traps aspiring published authors but ...
Mostly I don't get why everyone is so willing to say 'support independent businesses/creators' in every area except publishing, where even though we *know* they are exploitative and exclusionary, we still are so leery of self-published books.
And as you say, supporting a self-pub or small press author supports a host of other independent workers.
